What We Dreamt About When We Dreamt About Being Together

We were to be
adventurers. I’ve always
been split two ways:
afraid to be too far from home
and yearning for the possibility
of faraway places
(As if you weren’t the same)
We were to travel to the island of
Patmos, where it is said John wrote
Revelation. What answers
might we have found there?
We were to sail the canals of Venice
We were to attend a Masquerade
We were to find every gilded library
the world has to offer
We were to see the cherry blossoms in Japan
smell their scent, let it linger on our clothes
We were to find a small cabin somewhere
in a forest far from the crowd
We were —
I have forgotten them all
I may be remembering ones
that never even existed
And I still yearn for faraway places,
and I suspect you do too
But not with me, not with you
Still, there was a time when
we were to be adventurers
we were
we were
