Some Driving Advice for the Modern Woman
If you are driving at night
in the car with some boy riding shotgun
who has eyes that look kind in certain lights
and hands that seem to touch
and you come to a stop sign
that he knows well
and he looks at you
usually I don’t even slow down here
like it’s something to be proud of
like he doesn’t know why you’d want to be careful

for him stop
is a suggestion
He does not know
the importance of slowing down
Know that this is what a warning sign
that just because his eyes seem kind
in some lights
does not mean
his words always will be
that hands that seem
may touch you like a
I know it seems impossible
this idea of continuing to drive
But believe me when I say
there are men who know basic driver safety
they know how to read your signs
So open that door, and shove, girl,
you don’t need anyone telling you
how to drive.
