Gospel Truth

Have you ever tried
to build a holy hall of worship
out of words alone?
I did
And it crumbled like
paper curling to ash
over an open flame
But
oh, Lord
the choir still sounded so good
as long as I didn’t listen to the words
How sacred it was, how beautiful
while it lasted
And I know
I know
that you can’t love someone
into salvation
I know you can’t love someone
into someone you want to love
and you can’t love someone
into the someone
you think they can be
But, God, if I don’t try
if I don’t try
