A Few Facts About my Grandpa

He used to floss his teeth in the living room
couldn’t seem to understand why that was
an activity we didn’t really want to see
Sometimes, he would leave the house wearing a denim vest
over a bare chest
and we all just treated this as a
normal fashion choice
Sometimes, when I hurt myself, he would
make a sound like he was the one in pain and say
It’s okay, I’ll feel the pain for you
Sometimes he would sing in the car
and by sing I mean
he would hit the steering wheel completely out of rhythm
and yell every third word of the song on the radio
And then there was that time
when he didn’t speak to our family
for six years
What sound did he make then, when he felt
what I felt
I have to believe it would have broken your heart.
